best loss ever.

June 4, 2008

the game i went to almost a month ago (i had been dreading doing this post, since i tried to block this game out of my mind) was both the WORST and BEST loss i have ever been to. why was it the worst? the mets lost by 6 runs to the lowly NATIONALS, and on top of that i dropped my $5 hot dog. why was it the best? because i was plastered.

so the game started out ok. the mets were even winning at one point. and the nats were using Odalis Perez. You know, that pitcher that hadn’t even won a game yet. figueroa was pitching for us again, and showing promise still.

but it was all for not. i don’t even want to get into detail. its pretty painful. the only bright side is that joe smith struck out the side. i was with my best friend frank (president/only member, official joe smith fan club) so this was amazing for him of course. we also ran into the steves there, who i think were a date or something.

finding our way home was some of the funnest time i have ever had with frank, or at shea. good times, good times.

record: 3-2 (.600)

this was some weeks ago..but memories of shea never die

May 4, 2008

I go to A LOT of Mets games, as everyone knows by now. I keep a mental list of the top games I ‘ve been to, and I have a lot to choose from. (I’m pretty sure I’m going to hit that 200 mark soon). The game played on Thursday, April 17th will go down as one of the best games EVER for me. Ask my friends James or Mooge. They’ll agree I’m sure.

So we get the bleacher seats, where REAL fans sit. This was a fun combination of hearing some dude yelling “HARRIS SUCKS” the whole game, watching Endy Chavez pick his wedgies, bothering the Nationals bullpen, seeing the Dunkin Donuts cup up close, and being on TV! That’s right, we were on television.

As for the game itself? Amazin. Nats tied the game late, so it went on to extra innings. (“I only dance in extra innings!” – Chris Mougis) Meaning unfortunately that we sobered up by the 11th inning, but at least we got to witness a 14th inning stretch! I had work early the next morning, but after awhile, you just stop caring, while ignoring the cold, and just suck it up. The mets made it damn worth it too.

We won on a WILD PITCH. A wild freaking pitch. :) Also Figueroa showed what he’s made of. I wonder if LoDuca wasn’t hurt…would he have gotten as booed as Milledge was this game? Hmmmm.

All in all, a perfect night. Amazin.

My current record: 3-1 (.750)

sometimes an impromtu mets game is best

April 22, 2008

so here I am, 6 days after-the-fact, writing. so many other things going on. I can offer my opinion on Senator Clinton’s desperate win in PA just now, or elaborate on my experiences with the Blessed Pope and the decrepit Yankee Stadium, or comment on my upcoming exciting weekend in Albany. Instead I will focus on an unexpected “i’m not even supposed to be here today!” late afternoon I had last week. That and I feel I am already cheating my commitment to blogging about every Mets game in this final Shea season.

so I’m getting ready to leave work, when I get a call from Jackie Egan, who happens to have a messload of extra Mets tickets. At first I’m hesitant, since I had a LOT to do that day, wanted to catch the Rangers-Devils game, and besides, I was headed to the game the next day anyway. So I say no, and continue on…then it hits me. THE LAST SEASON. Why the hell am I saying no to anyone?

So I call Jackie back, who tells me to find someone else since she has an extra ticket. I call my usual rolodex of Mets fans, or should I say, so-called Mets fans, since everyone appeared to be busy. So I managed to drag my co-worker with me, who unfortunately is a Yankees fan. (Hey he had a good time).

So what do I remember aside from my awesome foot-long chilli cheese dog?? BELTRAN’S FIRST HOME RUN! LASTINGS MILLEDGE GETTING HIT BY A PITCH AND SHEA CHEERING! REYES AND CHURCH GOING DEEP AS WELL! MAINE AND SMITH PITCHING AMAZIN’! Man, I love this team.

It was the first time this season, I began to think, “So you’re saying we have a chance…?” (Think Dumb and Dumber on that one.)

My record then? 2-1 (.667)

I did go to the game the next day, which turned out to be even more AMAZIN’, but more on that another time.

opening night thrills

April 13, 2008

maybe Jimmy Rollins is right. The Phillies are the team to beat. They can’t seem to do it without him however. Eric Brundlett can’t even compare to that jackass. Three errors, along with the rest of the Phillies doing horrible, and the mets finding their swing, finally, made it a solid win of 8-2. Let’s also point out that Chase Utley had a pretty costly error.

The craziest part of all? Mike Pelfrey got the win. MIKE PELFREY. He was player of the game too, with a great outing. Never saw that coming.

Fights weren’t as crazy as opening day (I don’t think I’ll ever see something that stupendous again), but the energy was still there. There were a lot of rick-rolling jokes still (ahem, Bryan) but the 8th inning song was “Living On a Prayer” by Bon Jovi. People actually sang along, instead of Rick Astley being booed the day before. I don’t know, I’ve been watching tons of rick-rolled videos in the past couple of days, and now I kind of WANT that to be the shea 8th inning song. Can you think of a better way to say goodbye to the stadium?

I went to this game with my brothers, and with my boyfriend Steve. It was Game 1 of one of the 7-packs I have, and I have to admit that Mezzanine Section 5 rocks!! Can’t wait for the rest.

Record now, 1-1. Back to .500 bitches!

pelfrey win #1

and so it begins…

April 9, 2008

Yesterday was the last-ever Opening Day @ Shea Stadium. I made my way over there, after some backdoor deals to get the tickets along with my good friend, and fellow hardcore Mets fan, James. It is definitely a day to remember, and not for all the right reasons. At the end of the day, all I can sum up is: It’s going to be a looooong season. With Pedro hurt (again) and our bullpen sucking (again), there are more than enough reasons to be concerned.

The game itself started off ok. The Mets were solid on defense, and Carlos Delgado hit a 2-run homer early. Oliver Perez looked a little shaky, but managed to hold on to his stance. Naturally the Phillies came back to tie it, and later win it. What was Willie thinking putting in Schoenweiss instead of Feliciano? (In his defense, I found out after the game that Feliciano was actually stuck at the airport in Puerto Rico. He didn’t make it to Shea until the 8th inning, and by then the damage had been done.) Chase Utley got hit FOUR times. This is inexcusable. Three times hit by a pitch, and one time in the back while being a baserunner. Yet it was Jimmy Rollins who got hurt and had to leave the game. Can’t say I’m not happy about that. Ok now that I have the game details for other baseball lovers out of the way, on to more interesting things.

It was a violent game not just for the Phillies, but for Philly fans! I have witnessed many crazy things in my many treks to Shea, but I have NEVER seen the craziness I witnessed yesterday. Aside from the many fights breaking out (what do you expect when you wear a Phillies jersey to Shea Stadium? Especially after last year?), let me bulletlist the most shocking of all:

  • A very drunk woman, fully decked out in Phillies gear, is walking up the stairs to her seat. The usual chants of “asssshole” from mets fans are all around her.
  • An obnoxious Mets fan is going down the stairs, and says something to taunt her. My guess is “out of the way asshole” or something.
  • Drunk Philly Girl sprays this man with her beer, completely soaking him.
  • The man reacts by pushing her.
  • DRUNK PHILLY GIRL PUNCHES HIM IN THE FACE.
  • Obnoxious Mets fan then takes a swing at HER causing her Phillies hat to go flying.
  • Another Mets fan picks up the hat, and chucks it on to the field.
  • At this point, Drunk Philly Girl loses it. She starts screaming, swinging at everyone in sight, which in just minutes included security guards and cops!! She was held down, arrested, all while screaming non-sensical things. (The only things I could make out was “GIVE ME BACK MY FUCKING HAT!” and “I WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU!”) Obnoxious Mets fan, along with girlfriend, is also escorted out by cops.

ok so here comes the most shocking part of all:

  • an inning later, Obnoxious Mets Fan comes back to his seat, to APPLAUSE and a couple of standing ovations. There were two Phillies fans sitting a few row behind us, very well mannered girls. A fan yells out to OMF, “Hey woman-beater! We have 2 more for you right here!!!” Crowd proceeds to laugh.

WHAT. JUST. HAPPENED.? Have we reached a point where its ok to punch a girl and get away with it? This is what baseball is doing to America? This is where we take our children for our Nation’s pastime? Do the Mets fans and Phillies Fans hate each other that much? There was never anything this drastic at any subway series games!

If anything, I have learned to stay sober if I go to an opposing team’s stadium. Damn.

I have pictures and videos of this incident, of course. Coming soon.

So my record so far this year? 0-1. meh.

YESTERDAY…

September 30, 2007

…all my troubles seemed so far away…

Yesterday….

John Maine almost pitched a no-hitter.
Lastings Milledge had 2 homeruns.
The Mets shut out a team.
The Phillies lost.
The Padres lost.

…”now it looks as if they’re here to stay…”

yes, just like the Beatles song. My heart is breaking. Don’t say I’m being dramatic. I know I probably am taking it more personal than the players are, who make millions, and can just look away. Don’t say its just a game. I LOVE this team. I will always love this team. Last year, Game7 of the NLCS broke me, this might be even worse.

It’s ok though. Met fans are tough. I lived through the 90’s. I lived through that crappy subway series, and the era of Braves dominance. I lived through bad trade after bad trade, I lived with other Mets fans in the shadow of the winningest team ever just across a borough. Over the years, there is one slogan that has stuck with us.

Wait til next year.

So now what? My friend James asked me this just a few moments ago. “Football” I said. The Jets are losing right now…..bah. Who was I kidding anyway? I could never love the boys in green as much as my Mets. It’s over. It really is. I want to say I still believe. I want to say LETS GO METS. But they have shut me up. This collapse has shut me up. I’m one of the most vocal fans I know too.

I had started a Mets blog at the beginning of this 2007 season. There was so much promise then. It got discontinued because of stuff life throws at me. Distractions such as trying to graduate from college, finding a job, etc. Well I can’t go back to that blog, so that’s why I’m starting this one. To explore Life after Baseball. Life after the Mets.
